Great leaders are constantly growing in self-knowledge

This is the first in a new series of Coaching Thoughts we’ll occasionally post. Our hope is that you will pause and consider how these ideas could shape your own growth.

Great leaders are constantly growing in self-knowledge. You can’t lead others well if you don’t first lead yourself.

I’d hire a leader with undeveloped skills but strong self-knowledge over someone with great skills but a lack of self-knowledge. In fact, I’d rather FOLLOW a leader with strong self-knowledge and still-developing skills than a leader with amazing skills but lacking in self-knowledge.

Remember: growth doesn’t just happen. It requires intentionality. Take stock of your gifts and build on them. Take stock of your weaknesses and make sure they’re not tripping up you, your supervisor or coworkers, or those you lead. And set a plan for growth: in character, first.
